In German family history research, it is necessary to learn how to read and write German Gothic handwriting. Being able to transliterate and transcribe the traditional German handwriting is one of the most difficult elements in German Family History. Last semester, Fall 2007, I took a German Paleography class which provided a splendid foundation with quick learning habits in this area. BYU is the only institution in the United States which teaches a formal German paleography class! Most professional researchers learn this stuff through self-help books, dictionaries, and years of practice. An excellent source, written by my professor, Roger P. Minert, is used in most major Conferences dealing with German Family History. Called "Deciphering German Handwriting," this book is highly recommended for anyone interested in learning from one of the best experts.
